[Latin fnticus, inspired by orgiastic rites, pertaining to a temple, from fnum, temple; see dhs- in Indo-European roots.]
ORIGIN mid 16th cent. (as an adjective): from French fanatique orLatin fanaticus ‘of a temple, inspired by a god,’ from fanum‘temple.’ The adjective originally described behavior or speech that might result from possession by a god or demon, hence the earliest senseof the noun [a religious maniac] (mid 17th cent.).
Fanatic (short fan) often has a negative connotation, but i don't feel it should always have to. Brewster's definition says: "person marked by an extreme, unreasoning enthusiasm for a cause". What's wrong with having an extreme motivation or enthusiasm for a cause? Well, they say "unreasoning", but I would claim that reason is overrated. How about intuition, instinct and love? That has no seeming reason? And again, extreme motivation and enthusiasm, isn't that just another word for passion? Let's stick to the origin of the word: fanaticus ‘of a temple, inspired by a god,’ I say yes, to Passion, yes to Unreasonable, and yes to Love. This is my cause. Music our temple.
